Here are some of the most common myths people who visit our East London clinic have been told which has actually made their torn ACL and knee pain much worse, and delayed their recovery from injuries.
MYTH #1 - REST IS REHAB
Many believe that simply resting the injured knee will lead to recovery. However, this overlooks the crucial role of targeted exercise, strengthening, and gradual return to activity in the rehab process.
Without proper rehab, individuals risk muscle atrophy, decreased joint mobility, and delayed recovery.
MYTH #2 - RETURNING TO SPORTS BASED ON TIME, NOT DETERMINDED FUNCTIONALLY READY
Some individuals may be cleared to return to sport based on predetermined timelines without adequately addressing deficits in strength, stability, and movement quality. This approach increases the risk of re-injury and compromises long-term knee health.
MYTH #3 - PAIN EQUALS DAMAGE
While pain is often associated with injury, it doesn't always indicate the severity of tissue damage or the stage of rehab. Fear of pain can lead to avoidance behaviours and create functional capacity.
It's essential for healthcare professionals to educate patients about pain perception and guide them through graded exposure to activities to build confidence and resilience.
MYTH #4 - SURGERY IS ALWAYS NECESSARY FOR ACL INJURIES
While surgery may be recommended in certain cases, conservative management approaches, including physiotherapy and activity modification, can be effective for some individuals. Patients should receive individualised care and make informed decisions about their treatment options.
MYTH #5 - COMPLETING THE REHAB PROGRAM MEANS I'M FULLY FIT
Completing a rehabilitation program doesn't mean that you are fully recovered or ready to return to high-level activities.
ACL rehab should include a comprehensive assessment of functional performance, movement mechanics, and psychological readiness for sport.
Without addressing these factors, individuals may be at risk of re-injury or long-term complications.
